CyberCemetery Metadata Meeting

7.27.06

participants: Mark, Mary, & Starr

Digital Collections

Keystone is our framework; it has three systems:

  • CRS
  • Portal to Texas History
  • UNT Digital Collections
    • CyberCemetery Collection will go here
    • CC Collection only really holds metadata and thumbnail image; links to CC site

Metadata Process

  • enter the metadata into the template maker
  • save template.xml in folder
    • same folder as photo.tif (thumbnail image of website)
  • example: book folder holds:
    • 001.tif
    • 001.txt
    • 001 .pro.xml
      • this is the file to highlight the keywords
      • produced from OCR
    • 002.tif (and so on)
    • would also hold any translations or transcriptions here

CC Folder

  • each digital object (in this case, each CC website) will have a folder containing:
    • .tif (thumbnail image)
    • template.xml (metadata; includes URL)
  • example: acir.gov folder
    • acir.tif
    • template.xml

Portal Client

  • point to folder
  • opens files
  • creates derivative webpage, info about files, preservation metadata
    • automatically pulls creation dates, etc.
  • creates an upload package
    • meta-pcc.....zip (metadata file)
    • dm-meta......zip (dm = digital master)
  • dropbox for each system
    • zip files are put here
    • renamed
    • moved to directory
    • indexed
    • put online
    • right now, all script-run
    • this process must be completed before metadata analysis tool will see it
      • this is separate from keystone

Types of Records

  • simple digital object record
    • one type of file (can have multiple files)
    • books count as simple objects (even with .tif and .txt)
    • 99% of UNT's digital objects are this type
    • displays:
      • first title, thumbnail, description
      • link to "pager" (way to page through content, view sizes)
  • link record
    • a metadata record that points to an off-site URL
    • this is what the CyberCemetery records will be
    • Music Library also has some of these
  • complex object record
    • for websites on the server
    • trying to work out how to display this
    • multiple files that are not all of the same type (mixed file types)

the portal currently works with .tifs

after rewrite (next year), portal will be able to treat pdfs (hence, CRS reports) the same way

currently treat dates (other than creation) as notes

  • public display notes are at top
  • hidden notes are at bottom
  • will go back and change this later (add more qualifiers)

Folder Structure

P:\CyberCemetery\4DLS\website name\

  • thumbnailname.tif
  • template.xml

Daniel can change qualifiers more quickly than Mark
