Each student is required to actively participate in all classes, read all assigned material, complete two (2) Literature Reviews, a Theory Critique, and post results of Internet Search assignments. 

Note: Dr. Baier will grade each posting ( literature reviews, links, and Theory Critique) and notify each student via e-mail, outside of Webct, of the points earned.  

Required Text and Readings

Text: Pascarella, E. & Terenzini, P. (2005). How college affects students. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.

Readings: Selected readings will be assigned by the Instructor.


Students are required to complete two (2) Literature Reviews. The Literature Reviews should be posted by the second (1st review) and fourth (2nd review) week of the course. Each review should be typed (double spaced), not exceed five (5) pages in length, and consist of three parts: (1) a SUMMARY of the article and its research findings and/or recommendations, (2) a CRITIQUE of the article/research study with respect to its design, methodology, sample, theory base, research questions, etc., and (3) a discussion of the RELEVANCE of the article to current administrative practice and future research. Articles MUST be from refereed professional higher education journals that are abstracted by HIGHER EDUCATION ABSTRACTS and the citations must follow the most recent APA guidelines.

The first Review should be of a research article dealing with the impact(s) of college on the cognitive development of students .

The second Review should be of a research article dealing with the impact(s) of college on the psycho-social development of students .


Each student must create a Power Point presentation summarizing the main tenants of a theory or model of college student change or development. The Power Point presentations should be posted by the end of the fifth week.  The review should include: (1) a description of the model, (2) a discussion of how the model is operationalized (if it has been) including any available instrumentation, (3) a description of how the model has been applied from a methodological point of view, and (4) a brief discussion of the particular strengths and limitations of the model.

Note: Students must seek the approval of their selected theory /model from the instructor before initiating the task. 

The Theory Critique is due at the end of the semester as assigned by the instructor.


Each student is to find, abstract, and post to the Discussion Page ONE internet link that relates directly to the text or reading assignment EACH TOPICAL SESSION of the COURSE.

The links for each week's topics should be posted during the course of that week.

NO DUPLICATE web links will be permitted. The first person to post a particular link to the Conference page gets credit for it. If somebody has already posted the link you were intending to post you lose and will have to find another.
